YouTube Getting More Social = More Viral Possibilities – More Google Bombs!
Ok I am not going to pretend that I have much of a chance of getting featured 2 days in a row over stuff that Google is doing but they did announce something else yesterday that was probably just as big as the profiles showing up in search results. Tech Crunch announced that YouTube is adding a Beta program to make YouTube even more social. What this entails is you can see what your friends are doing on YouTube as well as a few other new features. Google only gave out 25 passes and unfortunately a hundred people jumped at the chance before I even had time to refresh my screen but this is indeed big big news. First of all unless you are making some really crazy looking videos your chances of making a viral video are slim to none. Well it’s pretty much no chance that some real estate video is going to make it to the top on YouTube. (Unless it’s a pretty bad video) But you can leverage YouTube just like any other social network well at least you will be able to shortly. Before now there really wasn’t much of a point in having friends on YouTube. It just didn’t really do anything. But now all that has changed. Now you can see what videos your friends are watching and even send them a link to the video you are watching in real time! Well you will be able to shortly anyway.
As I was saying this is a golden opportunity to use your social networking skills and leverage your video presence. Once this goes live for everyone you should be able to invite your friends to see your videos. It will be up to them to pass your videos on to people they know but that’s how this social thing works. Remember the golden rule of never spamming your friends. If you can politely suggest something rather than shoving it in their faces I think you will see your videos go much further.
But this goes much deeper as well because there is an SEO side to this. Many video SEO gurus say that the number of views on a particular video has a direct correlation to how high it appears in search results. This makes sense from a search engine point of view because if you search for two videos with the same title and subject matter doesn’t it make sense to show the most popular video? They already do this with websites using their algorithm so video should work no differently. The number of views shows how good the content is (or how bad in many cases) but either way it goes a long way to show how relevant a particular video is in relation to search results. This is also important if you consider how Google is now displaying video more prominently in search results. Trust me having a video thumbnail stick out in search results is going to get more clicks to your site! It only makes sense since it’s a visual color cue compared to simply a textual cue. So put 2 and 2 together and you have a very good reason to get some new friends on YouTube. This post is one of those cow prods to get you out there making friends now and you will be able to leverage them much easier later. Besides organically building up your social network works much better than spamming everyone in your contact list to join at once. (Although that can be effective)

You are also going to need a strong profile, after all people want to know who the heck you are before they make friends with you! Duh!

Make sure you fill in the details here. Be descriptive and don’t try to focus too much on your keywords here. Instead try to sell your channel to humans. I don’t know if mine is selling anything to anyone but I think it describes what it is my channel is for.
Don’t forget that a customized channel can make your channel more visually appealing. At the bottom you can upload a picture for the background… any ideas? This is your canvas so start painting.

You can sign into your YouTube account here and then should be able to link your Google and YouTube accounts together. If you check out my post yesterday on Google profiles I think this will be important but it also looks to be permanent so be careful.

So start adding a link to your YouTube profile everywhere that you have a link to any of your other social networks. In fact YouTube has potential to be one of your biggest social networks yet simply for its ease of use with video. I can’t make a customized badge for each of you and after doing some searching I can’t seem to find any easy way of doing this but hopefully the one I made might give you some ideas.
