Paper just got too slow

Posted by admin on Apr 24, 2009 in technology

I was thinking about why newspapers are dying off quicker than the dinosaurs and I was trying to think what meteor caused the collapse. It’s strange to think that technology can actually lead to the death of an industry but if you look around we have examples all over of this happening. For instance look at the music industry. In the United States they put a stranglehold on the means of production and distribution. Basically the only way to make it as a musician meant signing your life away and many artists did it. Even today most musicians only receive a tiny portion of the actual sales of their albums and that’s if they are lucky enough to be super famous. Most musicians don’t make a penny. Then the digital age came along and musicians now had the means to produce their own music and digitally distribute it across the internet. This actually allowed for global distribution which even the record industry could not achieve. So what did the record industry do to react to this new trend? Flex its muscles and try to kill off competition. Even with all that muscle, it’s still dying a slow death. You see with no competition it became weak. Startups made a better product. You could download music from Napster before the record industry had even thought of having websites. Whose fault is it they didn’t adapt? The same can be said of the car industry and monopolies here in America.

What about the newspaper?

It just got too slow. Whether you argue that newspapers held a regional monopoly or however you look at it newspapers just got slow. Sure they scrambled at the last minute to get on the web and I guess they tried their best to adapt but the problem was simply speed. You could get news stories faster and in better quality on the web. You could watch video and see full color pictures and there was no limit on the internet whereas paper is just paper no matter how you fold it. Simply put something bigger and better came along. Just as the printing press was perhaps the greatest invention of its time something bigger and better came to do the job. We can look back nostalgically but that’s not going to change things. There have been so many great inventions throughout history and herstory but when something becomes obsolete that’s just the way things go.

By the way that’s a great movie.
