Computer Running Slow? Constantly Churning? Tired of it?
Ok I consider myself to be rather knowledgeable when it comes to computers. It’s not that I started out some computer expert, instead it’s been sort of a love hate relationship where I hate it when something goes wrong and I would scour the internets looking for a solution. I guess the love part is that I do love it when my computer is running smoothly. Even to this day I am just amazed at what modern computers can do.
I was doing a little research the other day about the Cray 2 supercomputer. Seymour Cray is a native of our area and it’s funny to think that an area like Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls Wisconsin was once the technology capital of the world. We are still considered to have a good tech community. What is also funny is that the office computer that I am using to type this is faster than the Cray 2 which was the fastest computer on the planet when it was built. Long story short we have come a long way with computers.
When you put things into perspective it becomes especially disheartening when these machines break down. For the past few weeks this office machine has been acting a bit strange. I built it myself when I first started working here. I handpicked all the parts. It’s not the fastest machine on the planet but its pretty much overkill for an office computer. I guess that’s just the way I roll. But for some reason even with 4 GB of pretty fast memory it’s as if something was eating up all the memory. I am very good at troubleshooting but I just couldn’t pin point this problem because as it was occurring I was basically locked out. Whatever it was had been consuming so many resources that even if I hit ctr alt del the computer I was locked out. I couldn’t even see what was using all the resources. But I knew something was causing the computer to basically go into overdrive because I could hear it struggling and churning as if I was running something very intensive. I could also hear the hard drive going nuts so I knew something was making the hard drive read fast. My first thought was uh oh virus but then I began to wonder if it was a defragging program. But it wasn’t either and then something clicked in my head. What if it was Windows indexer out of control? I don’t normally index my files because I learned that even if you index your files “for faster searching” as Microsoft claims it doesn’t really speed anything up. In fact it seems to have been doing the opposite.
If your computer sounds like this and you think its indexing files let’s turn this crap off. I don’t feel like writing a full tutorial on how to turn this off especially when so many others have done this before so just go here for full instructions. They are virtually the same for Windows Vista.
I can tell you that after turning this “feature” off my computer is reacting completely different. Normally it takes several minutes to log on but it was almost instantaneous today. Also it used to take almost 30 minutes after login before it was “normal” but now it was ready rather fast. I opened up Outlook in a few seconds and normally would not be able to do that. Problem solved. What is especially strange is that I don’t remember turning this on. Either way it’s almost completely unnecessary and doesn’t really help at all. It’s just one of those things that had Microsoft more competition they would probably be forced to improve more features. Instead indexed searches work no better today than it did in Windows 2000.
