There is a very good article over at Tech Crunch that I think every blogger should read if they are interested in having more readers, not only that there are some great suggestions on how your readers can get more out of your blog and how you can get more out of them. This is a very interesting read with some great ideas here.
Some of the things that stick out to me are of course analytics because without knowing who is reading your blog and what it’s hard to get direction and speaking of direction some other great ideas are to poll your readers and also to get feedback from them in a variety of other ways. Another interesting suggestion is to be a good commenter on other blogs. Why not? If you make valuable comments it only goes to show that you probably can write a pretty good blog as well. This is something that I have always stressed as well. When I first started blogging I only saw the value in potential clients or customers reading what I wrote but I quickly realized that it might be my fellow agents and peers comments that are even more valuable. Why? Because it serves to validate what it is I am saying! If others in my industry agree with what I say then it certainly makes me out to be the pro!

I am sure everyone is pretty familiar with the iconic image of now President Obama that was painted by Shepard Fairey. Well apparently the AP (Associated Press) figured out that the original photograph is theirs and now are trying to sue the pants off Shepard Fairey for his original artwork. One thing you should know is that Fairey never made a penny off his work that he freely distributed and that others have made millions from. This is really an issue of corporate America versus the people and we as the people need to stand up to this sort of bullying. It is completely unacceptable.
Yesterday I demonstrated a way for you to not only protect some of your own IP (intellectual property) rights and at the same time let people freely distribute your work. Why? Because in my mind art and information should be freely shared, corporations shouldn’t be making profits from this. If I write a guide for first time home buyer’s am I really writing this entirely with my own original thoughts? No. I am borrowing on hundreds of other examples I have read over the past few years. The same goes for what Fairey has done. This is a clear example of fair use and yet this corporation has decided that they want in on it too. This has to stop. All of this copy right stuff has to stop.
I have heard that Obama is planning to completely redefine IP and copy right issues and I think this will be a glad change for many artists, writers and basically everyone who had no idea their rights were on the line. The EFF and the ACLU have been fighting the good fight for many years as our past government consistently sided with corporations. Enough is enough.
One quick addition. Maybe Obama should sue the AP for using his image? I think its just as fair as what they are doing!

The other part of this story is just a warning. Did you know that if you link to an AP story they can sue you? Yes. That means you bloggers! They can and have been doing this. Read this article for more information and please join the ban and no longer support the AP. Until they get their act straight and get with the digital age they do not deserve anyone’s support. Information is meant to be freely shared.
*Update* While I was writing this apparently it is being questioned whether or not the AP even owns the rights to the photograph. If that doesn’t show you how ridiculous this is I don’t know what else will.

I recently reported that Facebook was adding a new feature called Facebook Connect and Google was adding Friend Connect. When I wrote those articles I didn’t realize one very big feature staring me in the face. In addition to all of the other interconnectivity that “Connect” will offer they basically act to universally identify you wherever you are in the world.
Huh?
“People may have IDs for the various blogging platforms or commenting systems, but most don’t identify with them. It is a necessary inconvenience. They identify with Facebook or their email because that is where they manage their personal and professional lives.”
Well the point is to identify yourself no matter what site you are using and then report your activity back to Facebook so that your friends are updated too. Ok that may seem strange at first but when you apply this to the blogging world you can see the potential implications immediately. Connect will centralize your comments as well!
Whoa…
Basically no matter what blogging platform you are on as long as you are logged into Facebook Connect you have a universal identity.
The same holds true for Google’s Friend Connect. They essentially work the same way and it will be a fight to the death to see who wins in the end.
Does this make sense yet?
So long story short, you create an account if you don’t have one with one or both of these “connectors.” Now, depending on which one that particular site uses, whatever activity you do on that site will report back to either your Google account or your Facebook account or possibly both in the future?
I actually added the Facebook Connect feature in its Beta stage to my website but was unable to get it to work properly. I will play around and see if I can get it to work.

I am pretty sure that everyone who uses the internet is sick and tired of having to create 1000’s of logins and passwords. Not to mention I really like the idea of me being me on the Internet versus 1000 random names and logins. But this essentially does more by truly creating a universal presence beyond a simple login.
