Web 2.0 is Dead: What’s next?
I just came across this article and though it was interesting. I have sort of had this feeling all through last year that web 2.0 seems to have come and gone. I think there are still a few people who just started hearing about it but just because it’s new to you doesn’t make it new. And really what did it mean anyways? I thought there was a big push for websites to get rid of the bloat and the frills and skip right to content and still even major sites are so bloated they hardly load. I guess if you took anything good away from it that would be it.
I also think that many people confused social networking with web 2.0 but clearly social networking as it exists on the internet was here long before 2006. If I was to put a year on that I would say as far back as 2000 or 2001. That’s when hotmail was all the rage and apps similar to that. I have seen some comparisons of Twitter to some of these apps and honestly I think it’s fair. Just because it seems new doesn’t mean it is. The only thing new was the SMS features and that’s not much to me personally.
So what of web 3.0? I hope not. I think we can do better than that. I think we can stop labeling things especially when we are labeling something that is so intangible to begin with. If anything it will all be about evolution and adapting to change. Embracing new technologies and incorporating them as fast as possible. I think the rate at which they are incorporated will be the key. Maybe it should be called E! simply to describe how important evolution will be?
