As I recently announced in my last post there have been some major updates to social networking. So Facebook drops a bomb on us all with their new release Google, not wanting to be outdone, starts dropping some bombshells of their own. Also I promise to lay off the violent overtones in the rest of this post! 
Google Friend Connect
What is it?
Basically a way to streamline your social networking and integrate it within your website and throughout the web.
The goal?
Make it easier to sign in and integrate all sorts of sites.
Why do you want this?
Well it has a lot of different application potentials and certainly might make it easier bringing applications together.
In the least this will be a must have for anyone wanting integration of social networking on their website. I am assuming that after Facebooks announcement we will be stuck using multiple applications but that is the price to pay to be having so much fun right? Well I for one would have rather seen a more universal approach by using more industry standards such as the integration of OpenId within Google’s new program.
Anyways, I am sure it will turn out to be a really cool tool. Its just a matter of more development and of course time.

There were two recent announcements for social networking in the past couple of days. Stay tuned for the next announcement in my next blog entry.
Ok, ok whats all the hubbub about?
Well one of the biggest announcements was the release of Facebook Connect. Whats that you say?
Well here is the official page from Facebook direct.

Here is another story talking directly with Facebook developers about the new features and other things.
Well if you read all of those stories you will probably start realizing that this is pretty big news. In fact according to the one story “If it isn’t clear by now, Facebook Connect is one of, if not the, most significant initiatives that Facebook has ever taken on, and Schroepfer emphasized multiple times the weight with which the overall experience is being examined. As the system has just rolled out officially across major partners like The Discovery Channel, Digg, and Hulu, Facebook Connect could turn out to be one of the site’s largest steps toward Schroepfer’s goal of turning Facebook into “the next great web platform.”
But what does it do?
“It’s the approach of getting not just your identity, but your connections to your friends, and having that available both on the external site, and having activities on that site, as you are interested, posted back to Facebook.”
It acts as a way to universally sign into multiple accounts and also to basically integrate a bunch of different social networking platforms within your Facebook and thus within your SOI (Sphere of Influence) or maybe just your friends if thats how you use Facebook.

Maybe it seems like I have been reporting on viruses and security issues a lot lately but it also seems like a lot of people have been having troubles. Anyone in the security field knows that the best solution is being proactive. So thats why when I hear about some new potential threat I like to get the word out as quickly as possible, especially when it is a particularly nasty threat.
This trojan known as, Trojan.PWS.ChromeInject.A, “installs itself into Firefox’s add-on directory, registers itself as Greasemonkey, and begins searching your hard drive for passwords, login details, your World of WarCraft account information, and your library card number.” One thing to note is that “this trojan is not actually the Greasemonkey add-on, and only identifies itself as such”
Now you might think that stealing WoW (World of Warcraft) accounts seems strange but you have to understand that each virus or trojan is generally designed with a specific purpose or purposes and stealing information is usually one of them. Sometimes they want your Windows login so they have easier access to your computer but stealing WoW accounts and reselling them is turning into a big market all on its own. Paypal has typically been another account that hackers have tried to glean information about.
Now a lot of people complain when viruses act overtly and become quite visible and start tearing up your computer, but in reality the ones you don’t know you have can be the most damaging and can go unnoticed for quite some time. This new trojan acts like this, “Once installed, the trojan is capable of identifying over 100 web sites. When an infected user visits a site the trojan recognizes, the parasite comes to life and records the login/password details being transmitted. Presumably it then goes back to sleep, quietly keeping an eye on further system activity.” Basically what you don’t know about might be hurting you. Lately organized hacking groups have been targeting large banks, stores and anywhere that credit cards are widely used in the hopes of getting working accounts.

This comes as no surprise as Firefox’s popularity has been increasing and taking up a larger share of the browser market. Now up to almost 20% Firefox looks like it will be around for a while. Check out this story.
Now if only Firefox would work with my MLS and then I could finally and permanently switch!
